Fasting - higher chance of strokes?

Sunday, April 20th, 2008 | Science

Have you ever wondered whether fasting could be dangerous to your health? Of course you have. Apart from the torture of self-inflicted semi-starvation which usually leaves you weak as a kitten with the social stance of an Indian refused extra baggage, it also seems to be capable of much more serious things too.

Just have a look at the below article I read from Sciencedaily

“Over one billion Muslims fast worldwide during the month of Ramadan. Other studies have shown that fasting during Ramadan does not affect the rate of arterial stroke. This study looked at cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST), a rare type of stroke that most often affects young adults and children and is more common in women.

For the study, researchers included all people with CVST strokes admitted to three hospitals in Isfahan, Iran, over a five-year period. Of the 162 people, 33 had strokes while fasting; 129 had strokes during the other months of the year. The average number of strokes during the month of Ramadan was 5.5, compared to 2.0 during the rest of the year. The average age and percentage of men versus women was the same in the two groups.

“These results need to be confirmed by other studies, but they should be looked at carefully,” said study author Mohammad Saadatnia, MD, of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. “Coexistence of usual risk factors, such as oral contraceptive and coagulopathic disorders, along with dehydration in patients while prolonged fasting can be the reason for increased susceptibility to CVST. People and their physicians need to be aware of possible complications of prolonged fasting.”

This research was presented at the American Academy of Neurology 60th Anniversary Annual Meeting in Chicago on April 15, 2008.”

Whats life without a little risk eh?

I could google ‘health problems with fasting’ and get some results too :)

Yeah but the results would be insignificant, because the ruling says that as soon as your health is endangered you have to stop fasting.. correct me if am wrong now

Fasting as done by Muslims is unhealthy and dangerous.
And the results are the opposite of what it claims to do. According to the statistics at the police and Attorney General the rate of squabbling, arguments and petty fights increase as the month moves along.

fish: To tell you the honest truth, I have no idea. The rules seem to change as frequently as those abiding by them

now all im interested in is what causes CVST. it cant possibly be fasting. maybe a lack of something which by fasting we are helping the stroke. such a person isnt allowed to fast. anyone on meds has a right to stay away from fasting as well. and its not considered a sin if such a person dusnt fast even during ramadan.so to me this post is a bit weak in making the point its trying to. but then again this is me.

smoking causes lung cancer!

u know if the point of this post is to bash religion u could have come up with something better

Kaiza: CVST is a relatively uncommon condition. It’s caused mostly by oral contraceptive use, malignancy, infection and other such causes. Fasting is just a catalyst, and a remote part at that.

Now I’m thinking you didn’t really read the article or you wouldn’t ask a question like “now all im interested in is what causes CVST” when it’s clearly explained in the article itself :|

Konchekey: The point I am trying to make is not that Fasting is bad or that it could get you killed or whatever it is that you think i maybe saying. This is not religion bashing. It’s me playing my little insignificant part in the hope of public health awareness. My real point got lost I guess, as the moment anyone reads *something religious* + *bad* they assume its atheistic rambling.

My point, I repeat, is that this is more common in women and those on oral contraceptives and have coagulopathic disorders will have an increased risk of CVST if they fast for a prolonged period of time.

i’m certain we all have heard more about the benefits of fasting than the risks: it’s good for yr blood pressure, heart, digestive system & helps u get rid of bad health habits among other things. the strokes wud probably have more to do with their general health than fasting though one can’t rule out the role fasting might have played. so the bottom line is exactly what the study author said “These results need to be confirmed by other studies, but they should be looked at carefully”. let’s see…

I’m glad someone gets the point of the article.

It’s more to do with the dehydration than anything else.

@Arkturus: LOL!

um.. somebody already said what i wanted to say; we do things we know are not good for health.. like smoking, eating fatty foods, etc. We do those things all year long while we fast only for one month (most people don’t fast the full month)…

so i’ll agree with Fish.

i dont think that fasting could cause any health problems. its in the religion that its okay for a sick person not to fast. and if it were to cause any health problems, i dont think that it would be a must for us muslims. god knows best.

and lol aishath.
